Which university?

Postby parnassus » Mon Mar 28, 2005 5:06 pm

I am trying to work out which university to accept as my insurance offer. (Cambridge is my first-choice acceptance.) I've applied to study Literature with Linguistics at York and Literature with Middle Eastern Studies at St Andrews.

Advantages of going to York:
1. It's world-renowned for its English programme.
2. It's quite convenient to the boarding school where I've lived for the past four years - only an hour and a half on the train - so I could regularly pop back for visits.
3. It is located in a beautiful city, which has the additional benefit of being small - I wouldn't be comfy in a vast metropolis.
4. It contains ducks.
5. Linguistics is an extremely valuable degree to have, as it fuses the arts and the sciences.

Disadvantages of going to York:
1. The accommodation is grotty and the university buildings themselves are hideous - a metal-and-cement 60s' design. I love beautiful architecture, so this is a shame.

Advantages of St Andrews:
1. It's beautifully quiet up there!
2. I love the Middle East. A degree programme incorporating literature and my Saudi heritage would be wonderful.
3. It isn't too 'studenty' - there are very few pubs and clubs, which I hate. Perhaps this means that my sensory integrative difficulties won't present such a problem if I decide to venture out and mingle a bit?

Disadvantages of the same:
1. It's freezing cold.
2. It's nigh on impossible to reach.
3. Golf.

So, what do you think? If I am lucky (and hardworking) I will get my grades for Cambridge and won't have to resort to either of the above. But it's best to be prepared for all eventualities, and as I can't make my mind up I thought I'd get you to do it for me!

Perhaps I could apply for the Golf Scholarship to the university. :D All I have to do is demonstrate my prowess at golf, and I'm in!

Good luck in getting into Cambridge (though the others sound nice too)

St Andrews have asked for As in Psychology and French. FRENCH??? I just scraped an A at AS-Level, but my listening skills are terrible and I may fall onto a B at A2. Cambridge wants AAB, not counting the Literature grade I already have, but they haven't specified the subjects. So if I meet the St Andrews offer, I will win my place at Cambridge...whereas if I don't meet the St Andrews offer, both of them will reject me!

It looks like it's going to have to be York, although I dislike the rigid nature of the modular system. Your professors choose what you study, and I like to have more freedom over my work.

I've firmly accepted Cambridge and chosen York as my safety-net.
