Waz UP Y'all? How are ya today?

Postby Hermionefan5 » Mon May 09, 2005 2:48 pm

I have started a new topic. On the wall in my hallway at school there is a poster that says different ways of saying hello in different languages. I just wanted to see how many ways we could come up with on this site. Anyway, also wanted to know how your day is going today. For me it has just started, but it is pretty good for a Monday. I hate Mondays. But, the Cubs broke a seven game losing streak yesterday by winning 2 to 1 to the Philadelphia Phillies. That makes me happy! And today my bio class got out early!! 8) Also, my friend Sam made it to the next round on Inspiration Sensation (the Christian American Idol type show)!! He is a really great singer and there are only 4 people left (him, another guy named Tony, and two girls named Stephanie and Mellissa). 8) I am generally happy today as you can see. To start off the Hello game I would like to say what we generally say in America for Hello:

"Hi"

or sometimes "Waz Up?"

Hope we can come up with more and tell me about your days!! :D

Cheerio!

"Bonjour," in French.

"Namaste," in Hindi.

"Asalaamu alaykum," in both Arabic and Urdu. (The reply is different - wa-alaykum as salaam.)

"Sabadeer ton chow," in Thai.

"Hola," in Spanish.

"Jambo," in Swahili.

It's like the Arabic 'salaam'. Shalom and salaam both literally translate as 'peace'. Hebrew and Arabic are both Semitic languages and a lot of the words are similar in consequence. Only the script is different.

Wow, Philip, 'murhaba' is also an informal Arabic way of saying hello. I didn't know it was Turkish too. I love the way all these languages overlap.

Salvete - Latin.
