Dyspraxia conference

Postby parnassus » Tue May 17, 2005 7:30 pm

I have been invited to speak about my book at a conference in London on Saturday 2nd July. The organisers have given no indication of what they would like me to speak about, beyond a vague 'say a few words about yourself and your book'. They have allocated an hour-long time slot to me, so I am going to need more than a few words! Does anyone have any suggestions as to which topics I should touch upon? Bear in mind that this conference is sponsored by DANDA (the Developmental Adult Neurodiversity Association) so many of the listeners will probably have dyspraxia, Asperger's syndrome, or another spectrum difference. Writing the speech would be simpler if I were talking to a crowd of people who had never heard of dyspraxia. As it happens, there is such a wealth of information and anecdotes that I could include that I don't know where to start! School, socialising, sport...?!?!

I did think of printing off some of the messages posted on this site and reading them aloud as part of the presentation. Would that be acceptable to everyone?

Yeah, as long as names are not used without consent. That is a good idea, Madame_tigre!

It's coming closer now! I will post my speech on here when I've finished preparing it, so you can all have a look and suggest amendments.

You could say what made you write the book and what made you really do it. We all think about doing things but really doing them is another thing. You could also say what the effect of writing your book has made. Not only has it helped people with dyspraxia but it has helped others understand it like the family and friends of the person.

Good Luck :D

Those are good suggestions, Laura. I could probably open the speech with that.

I have many exams in between me and the conference, so I haven't devoted as much preparation time to my speech as I should have done. I'm starting to feel a little bit jittery now, as I still don't know what to expect. At least I am good at public speaking; nerves don't usually trouble me once I'm in front of people. (Touch wood.)
