Essay Writing Skills

Can anyone suggest any tips for writing essays? Although my style of writing is adequate, I suspect that lack of structure and technique is my downfall.

Mmmm...well, my essay technique is one best not to be copied, even if it get results. Basically, I'm a perfectionist to the extent that if an essay deadline is pushed back a day, I'll think "Good, more time to research" and pick up an extra 5000 words of quotes to complicate my essay, rather than actually going ahead and getting it finished a day early.

I'd suggest trying to approach the question in a different way than what is obvious. If it's a 'arguements for', 'arguements against' type of essay, save at least a paragraph which does something like argue the debate itself is invalid.

Par example, "Bismarck marked a turning point in German History"

* Yes he did...
* No he didn't...
* There are no such things as 'turning points' as all change is continuous.

...I hope that helps. As my Blue Day Cafe post indicates, I'm not thinking all too straight right now.

Ask your teachers for a writing frame, or alternatively learn a formula such as
Point
Example
Explanation
For paragraphs, and

Sam's (Style)
Sausages (Structure)
Can't (context)
Touch (Tone)
Lemons (Language)
Feet (Form)

I use that For poetry, or analysing English essays or historical evidence that you get in History exams
hope it helps babe xx

I beleive I used to structure essays roughly as follows (though I'll warn you, they were never my strong suit)

Essay Title

Introduction
1)Repeat question
2)Sum up paragraph 1
3) Sum up paragraph 2
4) etc

Paragraph 1
1) Point
2) Evidence
3) Enturpratation
4) Explaination (evidence+enturpratation=point)
5) Comment
6) Link to Paragraph 2

Paragraph 2
(see paragraph 1)

Conclusion
1) Sum up intro
2) Sum up paragraph 1
3) Sum up paragraph 2
4) etc
5) Link back to title/question
