Public smoking BANNED from 2007! :D

Postby parnassus » Wed Feb 15, 2006 8:36 am

According to today's news, the Government proposal to ban smoking in public places has been taken through the Commons with an overwhelming majority. It is going to be banned on the street and in all pubs and clubs! This is fabulous news - the odds of experiencing sensory overload in the town square on Saturday have just plummeted. No more smoke-induced panic attacks for me!

Ah, thank you, Government.

Im guessing that means you'll be aressted or somthing if you are caught smoking in a public area once the law is in action?

You're still allowed to smoke outside, but not inside in a public place.

I can't wait!

I have mixed feelings about thhis in general I'm in favour ogf the ban but smoking is not illegal and I think its all a bit Nanny state I wish market forces would work to have smoking and non smoking bars.

On a number of issues I'm warey of the nanny state, however this isn't one of them. There are some areas where left to market forces we'd end up with lowest common denominator, where the easiest option but not the best option is chosen, and I feel that the issue of smoking in public places and especially pubs is one of those.

I don't think that smoking and non-smoking bars would be fair on the bar staff, whose health is damaged by the smoke.

You can still smoke in the street, but any clubs, members clubs or pubs work places or public buildings you will be unable to smoke in from the summer of 2007. Basically any space defined as enclosed.

Places you can smoke- Prisons, your home, residential homes, immigration centres or military barracks. Warships will only allow smoking on the upper deck.

They are trying to ban smoking in restaurants in the city of Chicago. I hope it happens. I hate sitting by someone who smokes when I am eating! :x

Does anyone know when it comes into force?
