its not logic as in "if theres a crime and no one is around to witness does that mean it didnt happen" its science no one to pick up vibrations means no sound. im not speaking preverbially (i hope im using the right word) i mean scientificaly there is no sound if no one picks up the vibrations. the vibrations exist yes but no one to pick them up so no sound.

It still makes a sound, what sort of a question is that? We can't feel the world spinning, but it is. We didn't used to know light moved, but it does...

To rephrase your question, if a tree falls in an empty forest, does anyone hear the sound? No.

ok example of what i mean

Tree falls -> vibrations -> a creature picks up the vibrations -> sound

Tree falls -> vibrations -> NO creature to pick up the vibrations -> no sound

If you really pushed it I guess you could say sound was just our perception of vibrations therefore it doesn't make a "sound" though it still makes vibrations which are sound anyway.

The sound waves are still created (by the vibrations), therefore there is sound. Whether anyone can hear it or not is irrelevant.

*slaps forehead*

Of course there's sound! Whether there's anybody around to hear it or not is out of the question.

because like ive been trying to say when the tree falls it can cause vibrations but only when someone picks up the vibrations can there be sound.

ENOUGH!

*finds definitions*

Sound is vibration, as perceived by the sense of hearing.

For Sound

The vibration is there even though the ear perceives it. (Hence there is sound.)
A longitudinal wave, and can be pushed in all directions. It needs a medium to move, as without one it produces no noise. Thus, sound cannot be heard in space. (There is a medium, therefore there is sound.)

Against Sound

The sound is the vibration only as perceived. (Hence there is not sound.)

A kind of energy contained in vibrating matter. Sound travels through solids, liquids, and gases. The eardrums convert this vibrational energy into signals that travel along nerves to the brain, which interprets them as voices, music, noise, etc. (Hence the brain forms the sound.)

But...

Hah! Found it!

mechanical vibrations transmitted by an elastic medium; "falling trees make a sound in the forest even when no one is there to hear them"

My Auntie is 87 years old and lived on her own in a remote house in the countryside. I worry that if she was to fall on her own, would she make a sound??

It would make a sound, but if no one was around to hear it,it would have still have made a sound.

everything makes a noise, a tree falling could be heard from a small distance even if no one is actually around to see or hear it. When Krakatau, an Indonesian Island near Java erupted sometime in the 19th century the noise it created was so immense that the explosion could be heard in Australlia, it made a sound even though probably nobody was around for the final stages of the eruption (A Tsunami claimed most of their lives) the explosion which destroyed the entire island could be heard a few thousand Kliometres away. Depending on how loud a noise it makes depends if someone can hear it and say it's a sound, even if nobody hears it still makes a sound.

Pretty weak statement but I had to use this example. :D
