The Vikings:Good Or Bad?

Postby Katielauren2001 » Tue Mar 06, 2007 1:34 pm

I am currently doing this in History and I am wondering what you think.I will give you a outline of each story.

Good

Built ships
Strong
Intelligent
Good Travellers
(Discovered America 500 years before Columbus)
Good at building
Good Fishermen ect now for the bad stuff... [u]Bad[u]

Burnt Christian Churches
Burnt Books
Were Bullies And Tricked
People
Went On Raids

They eventually became Christians later on (they were pagans before)
and thus was the end of the Vikings. But what do you think the Vikings were? Good or bad...?
Dyspraxia is me I would never change that :)

I don't think that's quite true, Katie. Being a Viking was about nationality, race, and culture rather than just religion. They were a Scandinavian people, whereas the Britons they attacked were Saxons. It might be interesting to look into the cultural differences between the two peoples as well.

I don't think they were bad. But then again, I'm part Norwegian so I kind of have a biased opinion. Perhaps one of my ancestors was one? I don't know. I probably shouldn't disrespect them if that's true. My heritage also includes Irish, English, German, and Scottish. 8)

The vikings were bad, but not necessarily bad for their day. I do know they made raids on england and scotland for many years and demanded the saxons pay money not to be attacked but they attacked anyway. I don't kn ow whether they were particularly bad for their day though.

Yeah and we also gave diseases to Native Americans on purpose and had slaves from Africa...every race or ethnic group has been bad to another race or ethnic group at one point in time.

oh yeah. thats what i was saying eeryone has burned down raped and pillaged each other at some point. the viings put themselves in most white cultures heritage and the christians burned peaple and broke down sacred pagan places to build churches on top. or the romans who used to go into other countries and assimalate them as well as adding everyone elses culture to theres ( im dont think tahts to abd though). even today everyone one else is screwing each other over because of religion. peaple use faith to discrminate and destroy things. take the witch museum in cornwall, a great museum that represents my friends and myself but they've had a lot of threats from christians and have even had peaple try to harm them :(. sorry its sounding ike i hate all christians or christians in general which i dont , i was just using exsample.

Hitler was supposedly a Christian and he killed all those people in the 1930s and 40s. --He's a bad representation of our religion though..

It was, but then it kind of turned to "all people who destroy other people." We were trying to say that the Vikings weren't the only ones who destroyed human beings or forced their beliefs on others, etc.

Alot were brutes but some were very intellectually enhanced settlers and farmers that kept to themselves, look at the Orkney Islands, they didn't really burn and kill much, if not at all and they even built some monolithic monuments.

what is the point of conversation if you dont stray off a little bit. we drift of because werte have a discussion instead of just bl;ack and white answer on one subject which would be rather boring.
