BNP gaining a seat in European Parliament.

How do you feel about this? I think it's the start of something bad. I hope people realise the parallel between them and Nazism at some point.

Discuss.

I think it's dreadful. I don't want my country to be tarnished with the reputation of being racist and intolerant. Unfortunately, living in a democracy, we have to accept that people have the right to vote for the BNP if they wish, even if that thought is intolerable to us.

It scares me. I'm disgusted by people's apathy. The BNP didn't get in because lots of people voted for them, they got in because not many people voted full stop so proportionally they came out higher.

Well the people who vote BNP tend to be very interested in voting so yes I agree. However they still did surprisingly well which sucks. I'm glad Nick Griffin got boo'd when he stood up.

What I find ironic, to the point where it would be laughable if it wasn't so serious, is that the BNP is paraded as a "poor man's party" and, in a lot of their propoganda, they talk about how they are for the working class in Britain and how they know what it's like to struggle in life against all the "nasty immigrants" yet Nick Griffin grew up in a very middle class family in Wales and went to Cambridge University. It seems very hypocritical and patronising when he talks about the BNP understanding the working class in Britain when he plainly has no idea.

were you there?
I was there too...for some of it at least! If you saw the SKy news footage, I was the one in the biker jacket looking like a thug shouting 'smash the BNP'. I heard it got a lot rowdier after I left though.

I was quite disgusted when I found out BNP gained a seat in Yorkshire. I know quite a lot of people who don't vote because they don't understand Politics and don't want to vote for a random party but I advise them that it's still important to vote to avoid fascists getting in. Politics is a complicated matter but I think people should try and educate themselves a bit better, find out about all the parties and then try and figure out whereabouts they stand.

I also think Steph raises a very good point.

Democracy at work! I love it. Goes to show "everyone has a voice" is not necessarily a good thing. Anyway two European seats are pointless- the Pirate Party in Sweden got two, too. Just so long as they don't win the General Elections..

I hope the pirate party do win the general election.

Anyway we all knew this was going to happen the BNP where goign to ride a wave of xenophobia and holier than thou to get seats especially with all this nasty MP corruption.

Not that the BNP are corrupt at all...

And it is precisely because we are a democratic country obviously some up-his-own-crack prick will use it as an excuse to preach hate.

This is basically the reason that some countries have compulsory voting. I get confused about polotics and don't quite understand it, but I still think it's important for pepole like who have a vauge idea to vote. If only pepole with strong veiws vote, you end up with a very skewed result for elections.
