Creators of 'Wallace and Gromit' launch disabled characters

Postby parnassus » Mon Nov 12, 2007 6:04 pm

The creators of Wallace and Gromit have unveiled a new set of characters, who all have disabilities.

Creature Discomforts has been created to highlight the discrimination and difficulties disabled people encounter.

Aardman Animations, well known for their Creature Comforts series, teamed up with the Leonard Cheshire Disability charity for the project.

The animation features six new animal characters, who are voiced by real-life disabled people.

Peg the Hedgehog, Slim the Stick Insect, Flash the Sausage Dog, Tim the Tortoise, Spud the Slug and Brian the Bull Terrier will feature in TV adverts from January

The project's director, Steve Harding-Hill of Aardman, said: "Leonard Cheshire Disability's new campaign is an important step towards changing everyone's attitudes to disability. Working on it has been an amazing experience for us all at Aardman."

He added: "Taking the real voices and experiences of disabled people and creating animated stories that are informative, entertaining and poignant has been an immense but incredibly satisfying challenge.".

The new campaign is available to view online at www.creaturediscomforts.org, and will also feature in newspapers, magazines and bus stops.

I like the sausage dog!

It's a good idea, I like creature comforts for its randomness.

A wonderful idea indeed. It's about time that the disabled receive the exposure, understanding, and honest portrayal that they deserve.

It sounds like a good idea. I hope we get something like that here...

Wallace and Gromit and "Chicken Run" were all quite popular, so I hope it comes to America too.
