Well, here goes..

Hey, people. This isn't easy, so be nice. :)

I'll try and keep this short. I'm Tom. I signed up here on May 31, 2009, but never ended up posting until now. I'm 16, 6ft 2", and I don't think of myself as fat/ugly, etc. I was only diagnosed with dyspraxia a year or two ago. My handwriting is awful, I find it difficult to walk in a straight line, or keep my balance, etc. All of which are quite frustrating, as they make me feel so different to everyone else.

On top of my dyspraxia, I'm also quite socially awkward. I freeze up in conversations with a lot of people in them, or if I am unfamiliar with the person I'm speaking to. I have friends, but a select group of close friends. I struggle to talk to people/classmates that are outside of my circle of friends. As a result, I obviously find it difficult to make new friends, establish a relationship, ask for help, and things like that. :(

I just received my GCSE results last week, and thanks to my school letting me do my exams separately from everyone else, and with more time, I passed everything quite highly. :D

I'm happy with my results, but I'm tired of feeling like I don't belong. I find it frustrating how something as simple as speaking to someone unfamiliar can seem so impossibly difficult. I haven't got a great memory, so I can't remember word-for-word what was said, but I think I remember the specialist who diagnosed me saying that it could be linked to a part of the dyspraxia. Maybe the more 'planning' side of it? (Forgive me if I'm wrong here. :()

I got back from the Leeds Festival on Monday. This really opened my eyes as to how easily other people can just converse with complete strangers, and not be judged. I even had a girl around my age start to chat to, and flirt with me while watching a band, but I just froze up, giving short answers, etc. This happened again with someone else on another night. Same problem. This was the tipping point for me. They were really friendly, why couldn't I talk to them? I could think of answers, but not bring myself to speak the words. This brought me down quite a bit, and I'm still a little blue about the whole thing now.

So, after going for years feeling like I don't fit in, that I'm somehow not as good as the 'normal' people, I've decided to try and actively make a change, however hard it may be. This is a first step, posting here to hopefully talk to people like me, and to see how normal we all are. Eventually, I'm going to try and overcome my confidence issues, and start enjoying life like everyone else. Make some new friends, talk to some new people, and not feel like such an outcast in social situations.

Sorry for the long post, and maybe focusing too much on the confidence issue, (this is a dyspraxia forum, after all!)

Thanks if you managed to read through it all. I have great difficulty opening up to people, but I gave it my best here, after about half an hour of typing this. Don't be too harsh on me. :|

Tom.

EDIT - Decided to add a picture of myself (and my little sister ). Taken in March, so it's a little outdated, but to be honest, I pretty much look exactly the same now. I decided to add this because I just think it will help me realise that people aren't constantly judging me.

Hiya! I'm Steph and I'm 23. I have both dyspraxia and Aspergers Syndrome. I live in Surrey in south east England and I work as a support worker in a residential school for children with severe and complex epilepsy and other neurological and physical disabilities. It is very challenging but I enjoy it and I am getting better at it now! I love animals (I have 3 cats at home), the Internet, learning about other cultures and languages, reading and listening to music. I hope you enjoy the boards :D

P.S. Your sister looks adorable!
