Using a knife and fork.

Postby Star » Mon May 02, 2011 12:29 pm

whenever I eat with a knife and fork I always hold the fork in my left hand and use the knife to cut things with my right hand,(i'm right handed) this is what most people without dyspraxia seem to do. However I have noticed that most of them then use the fork in their left hand (or right hand if they are left handed) to pick up the food and eat it, whilst I have to swap the fork into my right hand because I find it really hard to eat with my left hand. Does anyone else have this problem?

I swap them around throughout eating, I think I only cut with my right hand though.

I do this too! Fork in right hand, knife in left hand. Though where possible, as I still find it a struggle to cut, I only use a fork. For sunday dinners in the house I use a spoon. Can be a bit of a struggle in a resturant when I'm trying to cut and if desperate I'll ask somebody else to help me.

I don't swap hands and I eat with the fork in my left hand and knife in my right hand but I hold the fork like a spoon rather than with the prongs downwards, if that makes sense. My mum is always nagging me about it as it's apparently not good etiquette. I also tend to tear at my food rather than cut it as it's easier for my coordination but nobody gets this and just think it's laziness.

I use my left hand for my fork and my right hand for a knife. I'm also left-handed. :)

I tend to only use one utensil if I can manage it, either a fork or a spoon. If it is a meal that requires a fork and a knife, I do struggle with it, more depending on what it actually is. I switch them around constantly as well and food does tend to fly off the plate as well when I'm cutting into it.

I struggle quite a bit with eating with a knife and fork.

But I have got into a natural habit where I swap them in my hands, I don't notice I'm doing it. I just do because I find it alot easier. :p

Like Steph, I use my fork like a spoon and tear my food as opposed to cutting it, as I simply have never got the hang of cutting food! My method is holding the food in place with my knife and then tearing it with my fork, which my mum hates but it's the best I can do I'm afraid :)
