Diagnosing dyspraxia

Postby Thompsonhu10 » Mon Oct 01, 2012 9:58 am

I am a parent of a 12 year old girl who I believe shows all the symptoms of having dyspraxia. It has been difficult to get a reliable diagnosis through speech and language therapists and child pyscholgists. The symptoms (clumsiness, poor social skills, poor comprehension, dexterity issues, poor posture, mood swings etc.) are causing distress to my daughter so we are keen to get a proper evaluation so we can move on with proper support.

I would be grateful if you could share your experiences with me in terms of what worked best in getting an initial diagnosis, and what a child of that age would respond to positively.

Does her school have a SENCo/ SEN department? If so then it can be effective to talk to them about getting a diagnosis and they will be able to help her after she is diagnosed. Also, depending on the severity of her dyspraxia, be prepared to be sent to various professionals for various parts of diagnosis.

I also recomend both you and your daughter reading Caged in Chaos by Victoria Biggs. It is a great book which talks about many aspects of dyspraxia in a positive way.She is welcome to join here to

Thank you for your reply. We have already done all the things you have suggested (including reading the book!).
We have gone back to our GP and 'insisted' our daughter is referred to a Consultant Paediatrician. We are also considering
our options going private, I find the NHS too slow, too bureaucratic and too frustrating!
