Can't Get Diagnosed!!

Postby partytime » Tue Mar 19, 2013 5:28 pm

Hi, I am 16 and I have many of the symptoms of dyspraxia, which were picked up on at the age of 5-6. I then started going through the testing proceedure after my school noticed it. However, I then moved and so the tests had to stop. Told the new school about it and they brushed it under the carpet. Joined secondary school and they sent a letter home suspecting dyspraxia. Went through the diagnosis process again, and got told that I do not have dyspraxia. However, it is known that the council my school comes under are making cuts, including to the Special Educational Needs Department. I dont live in the same council as my school and so got recommended to try getting diagnosed through my own council. However, my parents need to speak to some specialists, but they keep forgetting and when I remind them, they say they are too busy. If I could do it myself, I would. Getting a laptop at school ( which would help more if the teachers didnt make me work from sheets) but it would be so much nicer if I was recognised so I wouldnt feel so patronised when I occasionally forget my textbook

That sounds like a nightmare of a diagnosis route! I hope you manage to get one eventually. Sit down and speak with your parents openly and honestly about how this uncertainty is making you feel. It could be that they don't see how much it's affecting you or it could be that they are nervous about the whole process. A full and frank conversation should help. I hope this works for you.
