Gender Female

Age: 16-21

Occupation: Student

Your place of origin/ethnicity: Great Britain

Nationality: English

Are you religious?
Yes

What is your religion?
Christianity (Roman Catholic)

Do you follow the latest new stories?
Yes

Do you read newspapers?
Yes

Which ones?
Whatever happens to be lying around in the students' common room - usually The Guardian, The Times, The Telegraph, or The Independent. I try to read a mixture of newspapers rather than just sticking to one.

Do you know other peoples opinions on Euthanasia?
Yes - I took Religious Studies at high school, which had a core module on contemporary moral issues. I am familiar with a variety of perspectives on euthanasia, ranging from humanist to Reform Jewish.

What is your view on euthanizing?
I think it is morally unacceptable. Pain and sickness don't devalue a person's life. Euthanasia is a sign of hopelessness - the person is effectively saying that he or she has nothing left to live for. It is better to help people realise that life doesn't have to be perfect and pain-free to be precious, rather than promoting a culture of death. In the words of an Auschwitz prisoner, talking to a friend who wanted to throw herself against the electric fence, "Don't kill yourself against the fence...If you do, you will never know what happened to you."

Has anyone you know died of a terminal illness?
Yes - my roommate's mother and a number of the children who lived in a children's hospice that I used to visit.

Did they want to die by other means than the illness?
Some did and some did not

If so, do you think they should have been allowed their choice?
No. Many of those children didn't know what they were asking for. They were afraid of dying and wanted to have some control over their deaths if they had to die at all. No choice should be made out of fear. This culture only fears death because it fears the unknown. We should learn to love each moment of life instead, no matter what happens, and then the unknown won't look so terrifying. To do that we have to accept that some things are beyond our control.

Occupation STUDENT

Your place of origin/ethnicity BRITISH

Nationality SCOTTISH / BRITISH

Are you religious? YES

What is your religion? CHRISTIANITY (ROMAN CATHOLIC)

Do you follow the latest new stories? YES

Do you read news papers? YES
Which ones? THE TIMES NORMALLY, THOUGH WHEN ONLINE I TEND TO TRY AND GET A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES ON ISSUES

Do you know other peoples opinions on Euthanasia? YES

What is your view on euthanizing?

EUTHANASIA IS ALWAYS WRONG. EUTHANASIA IS A SYMPTOM OF DESPAIR, OF A LACK OF HOPE. THE EMPHASIS MUST ALWAYS BE ON TRYING TO MAKE LIFE BEARABLE FOR THE PATIENT AND ON TRYING TO PROVIDE EFFECTIVE PAIN RELIEF. INSTEAD OF TAKING THE EASY OPTION (TO END LIFE) ONE MUST TAKE THE HARD OPTION, AND MAKE AN EFFORT TO TRY AND MAKE THE PATIENTS LIFE WORTH LIVING, NO MATTER WHAT THE COST OR SACRIFICE INVOLVED. I ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THIS IS NOT EASY, BUT I DON'T THINK THAT THIS LETS US OF THE HOOK.

LEGALISING EUTHANASIA WOULD BE THE START OF A VERY SLIPPERY SLOPE. AS SOON AS A DOCTOR HAS THE POWER TO KILL, IT WOULD FOREVER CHANGE THE PATIENT - DOCTOR RELATIONSHIP. I WOULD NOT BE COMFORTABLE SEEING A DOCTOR IF I KNEW HE HAD THE POWER TO KILL ME.

VOLUNTARY EUTHANASIA (WHERE THE PATIENT DECLARES WHETHER THEY WISH TO BE KILLED OR NOT) IS ALSO WRONG. THIS WILL ENCOURAGE SOME TO FEEL THAT THEY HAVE A DUTY TO DIE TO SAVE RELATIVES / LOVED ONES / THE NHS TROUBLE AND PAIN. THIS IS WRONG. VOLUNTARY EUTHANASIA WOULD SEND A MESSAGE TO VERY ILL PEOPLE THAT THEY ARE WORTHLESS AND NOT WORTH BOTHORING ABOUT OR CARING ABOUT.

TERMINALLY ILL PEOPLE CHALLENGE US TO LOVE AND CARE, AND WE SHOULD ALL RISE TO THIS CHALLENGE. THIS MAKES US BETTER PEOPLE, AND HELPS US LEARN TO LOVE MORE.

Has anyone you know died of a terminal illness? NO

Did they want to die by other means than the illness? NOT APPLICABLE

If so, do you think they should have been allowed their choice NOT APPLICABLE (THOUGH IF I DID KNOW SOMEONE I WOULD ARGUE THAT THEY SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED THEIR CHOICE)

In what circumstances should a person be allowed to euthanize? (write after each)
