how to critically analyse

Postby Rosie-posie » Thu Jul 29, 2010 11:10 am

Although I'm passing my open university course, the feedback I get back always comments to get better marks I need to critically analyse more, I thought I was doing this already and thought it meant unpicking it and finding different points of view that argue differently around the subject such as using words like on the other hand etc. Anyone got any tips on this please?

I find this really difficult as well, but I get good marks in English so I must be doing something right. :) What I generally do is choose a word and then say something about it, for example if it is ambiguous. Then you have to talk about the effect it has which is much more difficult, for example "The ambiguity has the effect that makes it seem that the character himself is unsure of how he feels about the situation" or something like that. Sorry, I know this was a poor explanation, but I hope it helps.

I think you need to ask your tutor to be more specific.
